A Little Digging

Days to Launch: 6

So there's this guy I call Uncle John. He has a passion for the Bible, calendars, and the stars. In fact, he has a PhD in astronomy. Frequently he will combine his passions and write speculative articles, which some in the scholastic world might consider unacademic, but absolutely inspire the fiction writer in me! The first book I ever wrote began with my uncle explaining the Mayan calendar. Making the rules of the calendar into a whole new world was my way of assimilating the information and retaining it.

I still love that book first book of mine.

To this day I maintain that whether my uncle is right or wrong in his theories, he should be commended for asking questions and thinking of things no one else focuses on and putting his thoughts into articles that demands readers open their mind and consider something new.

One of his thoeries is the trivia question for today :)

The question is this: My Uncle John once wrote an article claiming that the zodiac signs (though they may have many layers of meaning) are symbolic of the ________. Furthermore, each of the _______ was symbolized by color.

List the (1) Astrological sign, (2) Other Name, (3) color that represents it (on flags, codes of arms, etc., as a way to tracking geneology).

Whoever wins this question, REALLY earned their prize ;)

Technophobia... I really need to get over it!

Technically, I'm guilty of technophobia on many levels, but the truth is that we have an upcoming generation that will learn, express, communicate, and relate in ways that those of us even 10 years older might now completely understand.

This video is the example of a high school teacher cluing in to an online trend and rather than balking, he created this video with them.

How many students do you think will be signing up for his classes next year, do you think? :)

Happy holiday weekend, and enjoy this video! The goal is over 1,000,000 hits. It's been out less than 100 hours and it's sitting at almost 7,000. Feel free to up the tally.

See you next week!

Guess the book, and you win the book...

Days to Launch: 10 :)

So today's give away is sponsored by me. The prize is an ARC (advanced reading copy) of a book that is not coming out until November (first hint). It is a distopian YA novel written by an author who lives within easy driving distance of me, but the book is being published by a huge publisher in NY. I read it on the flight home from BEA, but will obviously hold back on reviewing it at this time.

For some of you, the information above is enough to give it away. And for the rest of you who contiuously prove yourselves resourceful, if you want more clues feel free to ask for them. I'll share more :)

One note, a little water spilled on one page as the flight attendant handed me my water, but I'm pretty sure the page survived.

One other point of note: CITY OF ANGELS IS IN!!!! It actually got in on Monday, but I was in New York, so I won't see them until Tuesday. I hear they look great, though :)

It's Still Wednesday... Technically!

So TECHINICALLY it's still Wednesday. I was "trapped" at BEA without internet... or rather, internet that was so slow it might as well not have been internet at all and didn't get a chance to post.

Go 3G!

Anyway, today's trivia should be easy for Broadway lovers. I saw a show tonight. Two of the actors deserve to be nominated for Tonys (but only one was). One of the actors did not show up to prove one way or the other if they deserve a nod. One of the lines in the show is, "My favorite bar on 2nd is actually on 1st," and my favorite character, HANDS DOWN, was Marge. She stole the show--which was HARD considering how absolutely adorable/charming the lead actor was.

What show is this?

First correct answer wins!

A Little Digging...

Today's trivia:

Sheralyn is at BEA in New York. What booth is she in?

First correct answer wins! :)

Lost... Need I Say More?

Raise your hand if you watched the Lost marathon last night.

I know I did... with an empty suitcase waiting to be packed for a business trip, I sat and watched Lost get its big send off with two friends.

When it was over, there was silence. Thoughtful silence of trying to figure out if we were fans of the ending... if the holes we thought were holes were really holes, or if we just weren't thinking it through enough.

In truth, I'm still thinking... as I pack, of course. And while today's trivia needs to be Lost themed, I know there is no trivia I could come up with that a Lost fanatic wouldn't get off the top of their heads. No, the true fan of Lost needs more of a challenge than trivia. A true fan of Lost needs to be able to explain the series... concisely.

Jimmy Kimmel actually shocked me a bit with his insight (did his writers write it for him?) that he thinks the entire show was Jack's journey/test--and that Jack passed. (Also, did any of you see the Debby Gibson video he made as a tribute? That's going to have about 1,000,000 hits in 24 hours!)

So this 2-part question is posed by me, but the winner will be chosen by concesus (as in the first one to post the theory that is most agreed upon). It will focus on two attached characters because they are, in turn, attached to the stories of the other surviving characters:

#1- At what point in the series do you think Jack acutally died?
#2- When did Kate die?

The popular theory in season 1 is that all the passengers died in the crash, but that the "survivors" were simply the people who didn't cross over. Do you still believe that, or something else?

Most popular answer wins!!!

Day #10

Sorry for the SUPER late post! Where does the time go? You start working and suddenly it's 11:00. Totally crazy!

So this is a trivia question for those following TV series finales. Any of you who are my friend on Facebook may have seen my last update that Grey's Anatomy knows how to do a finale. Granted, I only saw three episodes this season, but I thought I would give the season finale a chance.

It was totally old school--which meant I HAD to watch it. Circa 1980's, it actually took the No Holds Barred approach of "no one is safe." Call me twisted, but I found it refreshing after all of the "safe" finales simply perpetuating other show's status quos.

So today's trivia is a pop culture question: List the characters that were shot by the lone gunman in last night's season finale of Grey's Anatomy AND (maybe this part isn't google-able) name the characters who did not turn into weeping, sobbing babies after encountering the gunman.

(Seriously, there was a lot of indulgent freaking out in this episode, which was the only thing I felt didn't work. Some people freak out in a crisis, but most have the sense to do what needs to be done in the moment i.e. hand a doctor something they need while they're holding a would shut and NOT trying to run away into the hall in the direction the gunman went... that's just me, though)

First correct answer WINS :) Have fun!!!

That darn video again!!!!

Okay, I'm reposting the video from yesterday, because last night as I was trying to go to sleep, 3 lines from it kept running through my head and making me laugh. Then, just as I would get over laughing at one line and drifting on the cusp of sleep, another one would pass through my head and I would start laughing again.

Always the same 3 lines.

So today is more of a social experiment than trivia and there will be 3 winners (potentially, unless one person gets them all). Do all of us laugh equally to the same thoughts presented in the video? What's your favorite line that makes you laugh out loud, and is that 1 of the 3 keeping me up at night?

Soon we will know!

So, what 3 lines (not necessarily consecutive) from this music video had me literally laughing in my sleep? :)

Up to 3 possible winners today :) Guess away!

Vitamin Trivia & a Total Eclipse of the Heart

Okay, first off, if you haven't seen this video, it's totally funny:

But what you really came for is the trivia, and today's question is brought to you by my brother Steven, and goes like this: What vitamin is technically not a vitamin?

First correct answer wins :)

Day #7

This one is a classic riddle about two actual historial people.

George and Evelyn never met but they carried on writing until late in life. It has been said that Evelyn loved George, but she was too old for him. George married in 1880. He converted to Catholicism in 1930. During World War II, he served with the Royal Marines. Partly in recognition of this, Evelyn's subsequent writings analyzed the character of that war.

Evelyn died in 1966 in Somerset. Her first full-length novel had been published in 1859. She is buried in Highgate Cemetery. He died at age 62, after having published his autobiography in 1964. He lived one year longer than she did.

How could these statements all be true? First correct answer wins :)

Day #6

HAPPY MONDAY!

Today's trivia comes from Day #5's winner, Rachael, and goes a little something like this:

Three brothers share a family sport. They race every day, all day long, and never stop. The first is short and stout, the second tall and trim, and the third poised and skeletal, but he is sure to win. Why, and what are they?

First correct answer (declared by Rachael) WINS!

Friday, May 14, 2010

See you on Monday!

Congratulations to this week's winners!

Next week we're going to kick off with a riddle from today's winner, Rachael, so see you on Monday, and bring your thinking caps to win :)

Day #5- Harry Potter Trivia

Welcome back!

Today's trivia question comes from Day #2's winner, Elizabeth. A bit of trivia about Elizabeth: she is a HUGE Harry Potter fan, so her question comes from the Harry Potter series. Are you ready?

Who said: Who inadvertently gets cursed by the opal necklace?

First correct answer wins :)

Day #2

Days to Book Launch: 27

First correct answer wins!

START YOUR ENGINES!

Days to Book Launch: 28
Days to BEA in NYC: 14

Alright, everyone checked into work, looked over email, and settled in? Are all kids safely deposited at school and carpools returned home?

Then let the fun begin!

Before that, though, one quick disclaimer: People have asked me if it's going to be Rhea trivia on this site all month and the answer is NO. There might be a few questions pertaining to Rhea and very likely based in other books, but the questions will be actual trivia that anyone can answer. :)

Today's challenge is a rare exception, though. As a reminder that I want to hear from you, today is all about the comments. No trivia involved--just the ability to leave a comment! Easy, easy, EASY! The hardest part is picking the number that will be the winner... talk about a mind bender, so I won't think about it to hard and just say the magic number is 68.

The 68th comment wins.

Can you leave multiple comments? Yes.
Can one person leave all 68? Yes.
Do the comments have to say anything profound? No.
Do they have to be longer than a word? No.
Will they be deleted if they're naughty words? Yes.

I think that covers it...

GO!

Attention: Reading Fans!

As a count down to the book launch of City of Angels, I have teamed up with other authors to give away a book a month on this site! (Check out the PRIZES tab!) Get great books for yourself or as a present EVERY DAY starting May 10th and ending on June 7th, the launch date of the City of Angels.

Every day there will be a new riddle or challenge that will require a little bit of work to find the answer. The first person to get it right in the comments section wins!

What are the rules?

(1) To win, you MUST be a follower of the blog, so find the Follower section right now and sign yourself up!
(2) You must answer the day's challenge correctly
(3) You must be the first to answer it correctly (all the more reason to "Follow" now so you don't waste precious time later

(6) Books sent within continental United States only
(7) You can win ONCE, but after that feel free to help your friends and family win!

It's THAT easy! And hopefully ridiculously fun, because that's what it's all about!

Check in each day and win! What could be more fun than that :)

Oh, and feel free to share this with anyone (if you don't mind the competition)

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

I'm Typing as Fast as I Can! *pant-pant* I Swear!

So my first book comes out in June. That book is finished and to the press.

My second book is due out in August... that one is not finished nor to the press.

To the writers of the world, I offer this advice: do not release two books two months apart. Releasing 4 in 6 months? I'm pretty sure that's insanity, but oh well! It means that 2010 will NOT be a boring year for me!

So, if I don't answer my phone or get back to personal emails, sowwy :(

But Margot, if you notice me missing your birthday party then text me, because that just means I'm in a time vacuum and I'll hit myself if I come out of it on my own only to discover that I've missed something as significant as a birthday!

Extreme Sheep Herding

Safe to say that none of us will likely accomplish anything remotely close to this in our lifetimes :) Totally worth 2 minutes and 50 seconds of your life!
