Every so often people email me asking me when I'm going to start putting my books out in paperback. I've put it off for a number of reasons, but this year I decided to put all those reasons aside and put some books out.

The first offering?

One of the most frequently asked questions about the Pimpernel series is:

How many books to do I foresee in the series?

After reading Royal Ball, I think most of you will understand that the answer to that could any number at all.

Could there be six books? Sure.

A dozen? Just as easily.

A whole break off series into other characters? Yes, please.

Some beta readers for Royal Ball even asked about that, which made me smile. Personally, I think it would be so fun to give you a book of short stories from the perspective of different characters. If you read Royal Ball and think the same thing, feel free to make your wishes known.

I’m a writer with a lot of muses. I can go a lot of directions, and it’s way more fun when people want to come with me. I don’t accept input on plots or character choices, but I am open to hearing who you’re most interested in reading about.

So if you really, really want to read about something, let me know.

Another question I get (more than any other) is:

Are you going to put your books into print?

Truth is, I was considering giving printing rights to a publisher. But I think I’m past that now. This means that in 2018, all my books will appear in print and new releases will have paperbacks, too. I don’t have exact dates for all of them yet, but I’ll let you know when I do.

Casting Characters

One of my favorite things is when someone is reading my book and they take the time to send me a picture of the actors they imagine in each role.

This makes me smile every time.

So, I figure, why not make a contest out of it? And why not add a prize? Anyone can submit a photo for casting, I’ll post them all, and we’ll see who gets the most votes.

I know there are websites that do this, but many want you to create an account and that makes things a little less fun. I’d much prefer people just be able to click and vote within a system that only allows one vote per person.

If you have a favorite site for things like this, let me know. Otherwise, I’ll probably just jerry-rig something.

Why read Pimpernel first?
That is where we meet all the characters and Royal Ball makes the assumption that you are up to speed on who they are and what they are about. There isn't a ton of backtracking or info dumping. The book is too busy moving you forward to spend much time rewinding.

Why read Walk of Infamy first?
Walk of Infamy is much less essential, but it does give you backstory on Kali. I specifically wrote this book as a standalone in its series, with all the relevant backstory to crossover into Pimpernel.

Royal Ball: Are You Ready?

So…I have to say that I’m really excited for Pimpernel: Royal Ball…but maybe not for the reasons you’d expect.

Often—and, some might say, always—things come to us differently in our minds than they end up manifesting in the real world. We create some elaborate mental picture and, when we go to manifest it in reality, some things don’t translate from the mental to the physical the way we thought.

This always happens to me when I write. Characters come to me fully formed and are pretty immutable, but they are pretty resistant to formulaic story arcs and have no allegiance to outlines. So I have to be willing to be flexible when they start pushing back on forced moves.

With Pimpernel I thought I was going to write the whole series on a certain level, with many dynamics touched on but not fully explained. It worked in my mind, but when I wrote it out, it just came across as convoluted and intentionally obtuse.

Characters I was trying to keep a bit masked had no interest in hiding, and even less interest in being chronically misunderstood in the name of mystery. They looked at how they were coming across on the page and just shook their heads, sighing as if to say, “It’s your life. Do what you will…but I’m over here if you're open to any suggestions.”

Still, I kept writing…sensing the judgy eyes of my muses that forced me to objectively admit that the transition from mental mansion to written page had some serious hiccups and honest complaining points. And no one wants that in a book they take the time to read, so I had to back up a bit. Think a bit. And, as I thought, I realized something.

The muses are right. Skip the soft-shoeing. Skip the roundabout route. It’s time to let you into the world.

Life’s short, right? So let’s get fancy.

For all those who are up for the ride, Royal Ball is the onramp to the world Jack operates in. And I love that world. I thought I had to wait to bring you in. Turns out, I totally didn’t.

So step further into the world of Jack, Margot, Ren, Claire, and Kali with Pimpernel: Royal Ball. I love the world, and hope you do too!

Happy (My) Birthday to Us All!

This year, I decided to give myself the birthday present of FINALLY COMPLETING the last book in the Rhea series.

Some of you are about to fist-pump the air while saying, “It’s about time!”

Others of you are going to be hearing about the Rhea Jensen series for the first time and not be sure if it’s worth getting excited about.

Either way, it’s official: the next book of mine to hit digital shelves will be Walk of Infamy—the final book in the Rhea Jensen series. And while this is Book 6 in the series (Book 7, if you count The Avenues novella), Walk of Infamy is a STANDALONE NOVEL. This means you can read it whether you’ve read any of the other books in the Rhea Jensen series or not.

What I can tell you is that if you loved Pimpernel, you’ll definitely want to pick up Walk of Infamy; and if you like the Rhea Jensen series, then buckle up. Things are about to get real.

What’s Walk of Infamy About? 

Rhea Jensen has a date with destiny. A powerful, multi-national group calling itself The Fours considers her a threat. She doesn’t know why The Fours think this, only that they will destroy her life and the lives of everyone she loves if she doesn’t do as she’s asked.

Rhea knows where to be, when to be there, and that the odds are not in her favor for a happy ending. That’s it. What she’s about to learn is that the past seven years of her life were not what they seemed, and there is a 99.9% chance she will not live to see another day. Her date with destiny is rigged to become a date with infamy.

The question Rhea must ask herself is: Is she going to die on her terms, or on The Fours terms?

Her life, and the end thereof, has just become a game for the rich and powerful to watch play out live, and they’ve played this game many time before with other people more skilled than Rhea. My Thoughts About the Book

Walk of Infamy is a total ride that keeps on moving and will be a bit intense for some people. Yes, it is a standalone novel, but those of you who have read the rest of the series know that there’s a lot to tie in and tie up, and none of it is for the faint of heart.

While Walk of Infamy is a clean read and is PG as far as outright content, thematically this book is easily PG-13 and there are triggers in it for sensitive readers. I like to be upfront about that, because I know that while some readers love intensity, others like their reading time to be a trigger-free escape. Walk of Infamy has some triggers along the way, so if you have any concerns about whether or not this book is for you, feel free to use the “Look Inside” feature on Amazon to start reading before you buy.

All that said, I’m so excited to finally get this book out there. Those of you who have been waiting for it know that it’s taken me quite a while. I adore Rhea and her story, but this last book is pretty rated-R in my mind and it took a while to figure out how to tell Rhea’s final chapter in the right way.

So…Rhea fans and Pimpernel fans? This one’s for you! Buckle up, and get ready for a serious ride in 2016, because Walk of Infamy is coming your way!

Introducing: The Avenues

What The Avenues is:
The Avenues covers the time period (4 months) between books 1 and 2 in the Rhea Jensen series. The story is told from Ty's POV and begins on the day he meets Rhea. This is a book about how their relationship develops.

What The Avenues isn't:
This book isn't a Rhea Jensen mystery, hence, it is not a part of Rhea's series which is also one of the reasons The Avenues is currently only available as an ebook.

A little bit more back story and information:
The Avenues has been in my head from the beginning of the Rhea series. I debated writing it back in 2004, before the first edition of Welcome to Stalk Lake City, but it just wasn’t a story that Rhea wanted to tell. If you haven’t noticed, Rhea’s a bit tight lipped when it comes to her emotions, so during the four months between books 1 and 2 in her series she pretty much held up a sign that read, Nothing to see here!

Except the sign didn’t block all that much from my author eyes because Ty was standing right next to her, basically setting off fireworks to get my attention. 


In the end, Rhea won. It was her series, her voice, and she didn't want to talk about it. BUT, I can tell you that had she followed her original plan, Welcome to Stalk Lake City would have never happened and Rhea would have been back home by her birthday. The reason she missed that invisible deadline wasn’t something she really wanted to admit to herself—or anyone else for that matter (even though one person was savvy enough to catch on and investigate).

Why did Rhea stay? Well, that's where the until-now, untold story of The Avenues comes in.

A heads up for parents and clean readers:

Ty is not active in the church when Rhea meets him. He drinks and finds himself in adult situations, which are not situations traditionally explored in LDS fiction. So while The Avenues is technically PG, let's expand that definition to say it's rated "Prime Time" because bars, drinking, and forward women are featured. But for those of you who want to see Ty on a more three-dimensional level, I think it's a journey worth taking.

And since Rhea is unwilling to tell this part of the story through her eyes, Ty gets to tell it in his own unique way. In truth, I almost wish he voiced more books in the series. Ty is very easy to write for. J

I suggest parents read it before their children do, which is a practice I know many of my readers implement. Some parents choose to not let their teens read my books while others use the books to open the door to difficult conversations. I respect both choices equally. And while this makes it sound like The Avenues is highly objectionable, that’s not the case. But Ty does many things that do not reflect the values of the church, and I know some readers don’t want that in a “clean” read.

Why I wrote The Avenues:

I finally decided to write The Avenues when I saw a blog of a reader who was going off on how she wanted to know how Ty and Rhea ended up together. She then proceeded to list a series of questions she wanted answered, and as I read I realized I had all of her answers locked in my brain and that somebody actually wanted to read them.

So, if you like this book, you can thank a ranting blog post of a reviewer.

Yay! I'm so glad that I have at last tripped over one of the soundtrack songs for Unpleasant Grove. It beckoned me while I was scanning through channels yesterday, and it's perfect. I tested it last night and *cha-ching* we have a winner.

Seeking Playlist Submissions

I'm one of those authors who has to write to a playlist. There is no right and wrong way to enter your personal writing zone. Some people need complete silence or to go rent a hotel room and write in a foreign atmosphere.

I need music.

Even if it's only one song on loop, I need a playlist for sustained writing. I hear the songs the first couple times they play, but after about ten minutes, the playlist swirls into white noise and creates the ambiance and mood of what I'm writing.

I'm currently working on two books. One is the fifth Rhea book and the other is an urban fantasy novel. Both need soundtracks. The urban fantasy has one song, but Rhea has NONE (which is also why her book isn't coming along as fast as the urban fantasy novel).

The fact that I'm not finding any music for Rhea indicates to me that the music might be found outside of my usual music resources. I know that it's upbeat/acton music. There is a ton of action in book 5 in addition to other tension, so I'm looking for music that doesn't quite let you relax.

For the urban fantasy, I'm thinking video games might have the music I'm looking for. I'm looking for a contemporary-classical sound without being cheesy. Epic. Only one song has made it for sure on the list, and I think I've listened to it on loop for at least twenty hours. It's time to add a new dynamic to the mix.

So... Any suggestions for either book? :)

Rhea would so be into this. Not any time in the next two books, mind you, but fast forward a few years, and totally!

March $$$ Madness

As I sit here using my psychic abilities to fill out the NCAA bracket, I just can't help but notice that I'm not exactly going mad over this whole tournament. I never have, and it seems very un-festive to me.

My March has no "madness" in it... and I kind of want there to be a little. So I thought and I thought about how I could be wild and crazy this March. And this is what I came up with:

Okay, SLIGHT change of plan...

Review: Wendy Paul's Rhea Recipe :)

Some of you may not have heard of Wendy Paul, the author of 101 Gourmet Cupcakes in 10 Minutes, and 101 Gourmet Cookies for Everyone. I LOVE her cookbooks. Her cupcake book is the sole reason I own a cupcake pan and am constantly stocked with cups. That cookbook is exactly what it says it is: a rocking cookbook that lets you create memorable, mouthwatering cupcakes in 10 minutes.

If you don't have it, get it. But either way, you're welcome to check out her review of the Rhea Jensen series and her Rhea-inspired recipe (which I am going to make and devour).

Musings...

I have to confess that I'm nervous. Totally. I don't get nervous often, but for some reason I am and the feeling isn't fading. All the Rhea books have been out before, so re-releasing them has been a fairly unruffling experience.

But Kay'sVille?

I feel like a first-time author all over again with this book. It's new, it's risky, and it has it's little fingers wrapped around my heart. As a storyteller, all I can do is pray I got it right. No one's read it, except for my editor. That's equally freaky. I like to have a set of sample readers to give me feedback--and I always get awesome feedback that shapes the book in some great way. This time it's just me, the muse, and a keyboard. No feedback.

Can you see why I'm freaked?

It's hard to talk about details unless you've read the book, so just know that I'm looking forward to talking to all those who are the first to finish it. This story isn't the next Rhea mystery so much as it is Kay inserting herself and saying, "Hey. Look, if you're going to keep reading Rhea's books (or understand vague parts in previous books), you should probably know a few things about Rhea. And since she won't tell you out of respect for me, it becomes my job to fill you in. But make no mistake. This doesn't mean I like you. If we met each other on the street we wouldn't talk. We both know that. But you like Rhea, and unless you know a little bit more about her and how she became who she is, the choices she makes in the future won't make much sense to you. So here it is... my story. No fluff, but all the stuff I really wish I could keep secret. But you need to know."

Writing Kay is a lot more vulnerable for me than writing Rhea. Rhea's tougher. More practical. She's emotional, but she has the background of a soul who was raised with love and support, in addition to being taught to see her own value. She has money, family, friends, and a brilliant mind. No matter how beat up she gets, she can only fall so far.

Kay is not so blessed, nor does she have Rhea's resilient shell. Stepping into Kay's shoes leaves me feeling a lot more naked. She has every reason to give up and forget her dreams. She has demons, wounds, fears, and no safety net outside of Rhea. She is miserable at the same time she is driven. In a word, she is: flawed.

I love her for both her brusqueness and vulnerability... and I hope you do too.

That concludes my midnight musings. *Phew* That was oddly cathartic. In this moment, I'm not nervous. We'll see if the feeling comes back. But really, I hope you love all the upcoming books, including City Limits, which I am launching this Saturday at the Fort Union Deseret Book Ladies' Night from 6-8 pm.

A Little More Le Parkour

I spent the past few hours looking through videos trying to find something worthy of a Rhea trailer. The thing is, I have pretty high standards when it comes to action sequences or any kind of portrayal of Rhea because I know exactly what I'm looking for. It's the curse of teaching sport karate for 10 years: I know what's out there, and I know what's good.

This, for example, is great!
